About the place

The pass lies at 1,416 metres, between the Rodna Mountains to the south and the Maramureș Mountains to the north. The DN18 climbs here from Borșa, about 23 km from the centre and 12 km from the tourist complex, and descends to Șesuri, in Cârlibaba commune, in the valley of the Bistrița Aurie. A roadside monument recalls the battle of 1717, when the people of Borșa, led by the archpriest Șandor Lupu, defeated Tatars returning from a raid.

Prislop Monastery, dedicated to the Transfiguration and the Holy Trinity, was begun in 1999 and put into use in 2008. Next to the church is a military cemetery with 136 soldiers from both world wars. The pass is also the traditional site of Hora la Prislop, a folk gathering recorded since 1738 and revived in 1968, held on the first Sunday after 15 August. On Google the monastery holds 4.6 from about 1,300 reviews.

Good to know

  • In winter the DN18 to the pass can be snowy and foggy; drive up only on winter tyres and check the road first.
  • Hora la Prislop was not held in 2024; before planning an August visit around it, check the Borșa town hall or county council announcements.
  • It is often windy at the top, even in summer; bring an extra layer.
