About the place

Elie Wiesel was born in this house in 1928 and lived here until 1944, when, aged 15, he was deported with his family to Auschwitz. He survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, wrote 'Night', translated into more than 30 languages, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. He died in 2016.

The museum, opened in 2002 and run by the Muzeul Maramureșan, shows the life of the Jewish community of Maramureș: religious objects, prayer books, photographs and documents, and the story of the 1944 deportation. Talks are held in the basement, and open-air exhibitions in the courtyard. It holds 4.6 on Google from 305 reviews.
