About the place
Breb is a village of about 900 people in Ocna Șugatag commune, at the foot of the Gutâi Mountains, with the Rooster's Crest above it. It has become one of the most visited villages in Maramureș, with more than 30 places to stay, for its wooden houses and gates, its hay meadows and the folk dress that locals still wear.
The wooden church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel was built in 1622, according to tree-ring dating, and the timber of its tower was felled in the winter of 1529–1530. Part of the 1626 wall painting can still be seen. The church stands in a churchyard with stone, wooden and iron crosses from different periods, a small gate from 1790 and a parish house.
